What is a remote job?

You’ll agree with me that many people are moving into tech because they want to work remotely, which is fine. But what exactly is this remote work? A remote job is a work arrangement in which an employee works from a location other than the office.

This means that you can work from home, a workspace, a coffee shop, or even a tree, just kidding. Nonetheless, remote work allows you to work from wherever you want and increases your productivity.

The only and most important condition is you have to be connected to the internet so that your team can connect with you successfully during meetings and task management activities. Remote jobs are becoming more prevalent due to technological advancements and the desire for a better work-life balance.

Remote jobs have been said to give you more time to spend with family while carrying out your duties as you should.

Earning potential of a tech remote worker

The big bag! Like techies call it is one of the top reasons why people choose remote roles over on-site roles. This is because while working remotely you can easily work for 2 or 3 brands at the same time, which will increase your overall pay compared to earning from just 1 brand if you choose to work on-site.

Remote workers in the tech industry have the potential to earn high salaries. According to a recent study, the average salary for a remote tech worker is $76,526. Let’s come to Nigeria, for tech Newbies who are booking at securing 2 to 3 remote roles, you should be looking at having a cumulative income of 250,000 nairas in a month if you are lucky to get on brands that pay well.

However, you shouldn’t do less than 150,000 irrespective of the brands and side gigs you get on for a start.

How to position for remote roles

To secure remote jobs outside of Nigeria, it’s important to have the right skills and experience, because these will be the foundation for every other thing you want to build. So, your skillset is very important before any other thing after which you can now consider these strategies.

  • Build a strong online presence: I call this putting yourself out there. You have to know how to do this, you must have seen many professionals talking about their skillsets and experiences on LinkedIn, they are simply building their online presence in that particular domain. You can also use other Social media platforms. So, if you are a tech newbie, optimise your LinkedIn and tell a story about your experience. You do not have to be a pro before you can put yourself out there, you can do this by telling a story about your learning journey.
  • Create a professional portfolio: Your portfolio is another big thing you should focus on. While working on free projects and example tasks you can upload these on your portfolio, for UI/UX designers who use Behance. However, the portfolio tool is different for every skill, but the goal is to have a place that houses your work and that you can easily present to future employers.
  • Network and connect: This is very important because someone with the right network and connect will get remote work ahead of you even if they have a lesser skillset and experience than you. This is why I advise people to take structured learning with an academy like More Techies as it doesn’t just help them learn a skill, they simply get to create a network of techies through that means. By putting yourself out there, you also get to create a proper network of techies.

What you need to remotely work effectively

To effectively work remotely, you will need a few key tools and resources. These include a laptop, a reliable internet connection, a comfortable work area, and communication tools like Slack and video conferencing software. You will also want to use scheduling tools like google calendar and any.do which will help you with task management.  It’s also important to establish a routine and set boundaries to ensure you remain productive and efficient.
