My Tech Story

Tobi Oyetunji

I’m the Community Manager at More Techies; I likewise function as a Product Manager with Trifta, and I’m affiliated with Cashbuddy on Products.

  • What prompted you to take on this particular role?

My first interest was in (still in) being a Product Manager, which emanated from my keen passion in building/developing quality products for Customers (having previously worked as a Quality Control lead and Process flow lead in an FMCG). Later, I developed an interest in Community Management, having contributed to building a Product Managers’ Community, and being a Product Complaints Manager with a fashion/style Company.

  • How long have you been working in your job role?

2+ years in Product Management, and 1+ year of Community Management.

  • How did you get your tech role?

My Community Management role was gotten from the More Techies Community (More Tribe); I started as an intern and grew into a Community Manager.

For my Product Manager role with Trifta, it was via a referral from a senior PM (Joseph Badru) while volunteering as an Associate Product with him on a Service Export Project.

My affiliation with Cashbuddy on products started from LinkedIn while the company was undergoing its bootstrapping process. In all, my impacts on other products and projects were through networking and referrals from Seniors and colleagues on the projects.

  • How does your typical workday in your life play out?

Well, as a Community Manager with More Techies, my typical day starts with listing out the tasks I do within and outside the Community that ranges from updating the community with the necessary information, to reacting to people’s comments/inquiries, following up with the metrics from polls/surveys conducted and general Community metrics, iterating on Tribers ideas for possible awesome implementation, working on some parts of the newsletter content and blog posts, brainstorming with the humans of More Techies on various concepts and ideas to implement, etc.

In my Product Manager role with Trifta, having collaborated with the product team on product ideas/features to be built, I interphase mostly with our app users understanding their experiences on the already existing Product features and getting feedback to iterate on with the Product and engineering team for subsequent implementation as needed. In doing this, meetings are scheduled and held, calls are made, visitations are done, etc.

It’s usually a day of new experiences and experimentation that yield both expected and unexpected results, that pushes me to become better.

  • What platform do you enjoy using in the course of working and what fascinates you about it?

I actually enjoy all the platforms I use both as a Community Manager and a Product Manager.

For CM, the Telegram platform (for hosting our Tribers) dazzles me with its unique Community features especially its edit feature that is made available both for pictures and messages! Other tools/platforms used are cool too – Freeflarum for our Job opportunities, Trustpilot for reviews, Anchor for all our space episodes, Twitter for spaces, Flodesk for newsletters, Canva for designs, and Airtable for collaboration with other humans of More Techies.

I like all the PM platform/tools I use also – from Confluence to Trello, Jira, and Google Workspace I use for collaboration and Management; Whimsical, Figma, and Miro for Wireframing/Process flows; Freshdesk, etc. I’m so open to exploring more platforms and tools as I grow in this tech space.

  • What’s that one thing you wished could be taken off your role’s functions? Better put, a major thorn in your flesh…😅

Every challenge pushes me to further use my inherent skills though, and I always see it as a medium to explore and thrive. However, meetings upon meetings actually is a thing😄. Then, this can’t be avoided, especially as a Product Manager. However, having it short would be fine.

  • What do you think would make you perform better at what you do? (You never can tell who’s reading this presently)

A serene and fun work environment that enhances one’s intellectual growth and development, with a good renumeration, benefits and perks.

  • Who do you look up to as a role model in your role and why?

I practically look up to every notable and emulatable professionals in the tech industry.

In the same vein, I’ve been lucky to be guided and pushed forward by many of them like Joseph Badru and Jide Abiose, etc. in my PM journey; also Joy Eneghalu-Anele in my CM journey.

  • Trying not to sound like that troublesome HR… Tell me, where do you see yourself in 5 years?

The next 5 years marks 7+ years of my Product Management; hence, would be a Product Director, involved with managing a team of Product Managers, strengthening the overall proficiency of the Product Management team.

  • Techies are stereotyped as nonchalant; some even claim to work around the clock and have little time for socializing… How true🤷‍♂️?

Not very true. We may be working round the clock (especially at the early stages), but every techie has his/her own way of socializing/having fun.

– I play games (Play Station – PES specifically).
– I listen to music (Christian and Country music) and watch movies.
– I keep abreast of the times by listening to the radio.
– Travelling to new places.

    • What impact has More Techies had on you and your role? …and what do you have to tell More Techies?

More Techies’ impact in my tech journey is tremendous. It started with the Mentor Match Program in January 2022 (where my Product Management skill was sharpened); then, followed by the platform granted to me to develop my Community Management skill. Also, the direct impact of the founder (Joy Eneghalu-Anele on my CM journey has been awesome so far).

It’s the Techies’ community (More Tribe) for me. So, thank you More Techies for the gift of the Community and the amazing Tribers therein.✌️

    • What golden secret can you tell someone trying to get into a similar role as yours to help them succeed?

There are opportunities all around you (whether to transition into tech, or scale up in tech), waiting to be availed and maximally used. Don’t miss it!

    • Do you have any milestones you think wouldn’t have been achieved? …but, alas…you smashed it!💪🏽🚀🤝

Well, I would say getting this far is a huge milestone I’m proud of! Each of the inputs on my part and contributions from people around me has brought me this far. I strongly look forward to years to come in my tech journey where more gigantic milestones would have been smashed!

      • If you don’t mind, do you have works/products you’ve worked on that you want to showcase?

Yeah, I have worked on some Products and Projects ranging from Fintech to E-commerce, Inventory, Waste Management, Tourism, and Logistics sectors.

Well, cherish your circle of friends that seek your growth always; they are precious!

That aside…sincerely, I look forward to more perks and benefits coming my way😉, as I keep building products and managing the Community of amazing Customers!😁

      • Before I leave you😊, what’s that one thing that’s going/working well for you ✅, that you can consider as a rose🌹, ever since you ventured into your field of tech?

Leveraging every opportunity seen. Leaving a positive mark and impact on each of the products/projects worked on, the environment reached, and the people I’ve worked/associated with. This has paved many ways, and I look forward to more!
